Reminder: E-Prescribe Controlled Medications Guidelines

For All Physicians, APPs and Residents

As of Jan. 1, new regulations require e-prescriptions for controlled substances. New guidelines also allow advanced practice providers with e-prescribing capabilities to e-prescribe controlled medications using SecureAuth. This applies to inpatient discharge medications and outpatient medication orders placed in clinic.

Important:

  • APPs cannot place outpatient orders for Schedule II medications.
  • Residents with institutional DEAs cannot e-prescribe controlled substances, only non-controlled substances.
  • Residents with their own DEAs (non-institutional) can e-prescribe controlled substances.

For more information on e-prescribing using SecureAuth or instructions on signing up, review the tip sheet, or visit the E-Rx Controlled Substances website.

If you have any issues with sign up or access, contact the IT Physicians Help Desk, 832.667.5555.
