As the holiday season approaches, follow these tips to prevent your data from being hacked or lost:
- Set Up Multifactor Authentication (MFA) on Your Accounts.MFA adds an extra layer of protection to your digital accounts. If your username and password somehow end up in the wrong hands, MFA will keep the doors to your accounts shut because an additional code is required for access.
- Back Up Data. It’s easier than ever before to back up your personal files to cloud storage services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud and Google Drive. The advantage to these services is they act as a safety net. If your laptop or desktop computer gets hit by malware, key data can still be recovered.
Lock Phones. Make sure your family’s phones are properly locked and protected from unauthorized access if they’re stolen or lost. If biometric security features, like fingerprint or facial recognition aren’t enabled yet, encourage your family members to turn them on. It’s also a good idea to make sure the locations of their devices are trackable, in case the device is stolen or misplaced.
