Telenursing Pilot Project Achieves Notable Success

Just a few months after the June 2022 launch, HM’s telenursing pilot program began receiving rave recognition among patients, clinicians and hospital leadership.

Utilizing existing MyMethodist Patient iPads® to connect with patients remotely, experienced telenurses are supporting bedside nurses to handle admission and discharge documentation. And after six months, the units’ piloting telenursing have seen improvements in patient satisfaction, patient safety, length of stay and documentation completion.

A four month comparative average of patient satisfaction scores saw a combined improvement of 5.85% in sample units. A sample of patient comments about telenursing includes, “I like this, and you took the time to personalize it about me,” and “This hospital is high tech and advanced.”

Meanwhile, from June to October 2022, more than 7,600 admissions and discharges were completed through telenursing, with an average call time under 13.5 minutes. And telenursing has helped to catch a number of potential errors and issues, improving patient safety, including:

  • Correcting the pharmacy location for discharge medications.

  • Finding discrepancies on discharge medication dosages.

  • Following up on missing prescriptions.

  • Following up on discharge education.

  • Addressing family member concerns and providing reassurance on plan of care.

Originally launched with 13 units at HMH, the program has already expanded to units at HMB, HMW and HMWB, with similar positive results. Though a specific timetable is not available yet, plans are to continue introducing telenursing services throughout the system over this year.
