New Tracking Tags for BioMed Devices

More than 46,000 biomed devices are receiving new tags for asset tracking and environmental monitoring by Intelligent Locations (IL). The new tags are generally placed on the back of biomed devices, including imaging and monitoring equipment, IV and feeding tubes, PCA and KCI trauma pumps, crash and airway carts and patient transport equipment.

This is part of the replacement of our biomed device remote tracking location service (RTLS) system.

More than 5,000 devices have already been tagged at HMB and HMSL, with 3,000 more planned. The tag replacement process will start:

  • Aug. 28 at HMCCH, HMW and HMWB.

  • Sept. 11 at HMH and HMRI.

  • Sept. 25 at HMCL and HMTW.

  • Nov. 1 at HMPCG and HMSPG.

The project team will communicate with each hospital campus’ RTLS and biomed leaders to coordinate this effort. If you have any questions about this effort, please contact rtls@houstonmethodist.org

The IL platform’s dashboard provides real-time, HIPAA-compliant monitoring of our equipment and environmental conditions. The dashboard can also help determine where assets are located; if they’re available, in use or idle; and calculate utilization rates. They can also be used to track valuable medical equipment, like telemetry monitors, which are easily misplaced or lost.

The tags also monitor environmental conditions, like temperature and relative humidity levels. They can be attached to areas where sterile items are stored, invasive procedures are performed and where certain temperatures must be maintained. This monitoring and reporting help ensure compliance for environmental monitoring.

If you previously used GE Find IT dashboards, details on new training in LMS for the IL dashboard will be available soon.

RTLS has the ability to streamline and automate clinical workflows as well. Stay tuned as we continue to develop and pilot different opportunities for this technology.
