Four Traits of a Phishing Scam

The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your coworkers from a phishing scam is to teach yourself how to spot one. A phish is an email that is made to look like it’s coming from a safe sender but is intended to cause harm to your computer or steal personal information. The tricky part is that a phishing scam doesn’t always come in the form of an email. It’s important to have a healthy level of skepticism for all incoming messages (email, text, social media, voice calls). Here are the four traits that most scams have:

  • The message arrives unexpectedly.

  • You’re asked to do something the sender has probably never asked you to do before.

  • The message has a sense of urgency and usually includes a consequence if you don’t take immediate action.

  • Falling for the scam could result in harm to you or your organization.
