Clinical Notes from the CNIO – November 2024

The Gift of Time for the Holidays

As we begin the holiday season, with Thanksgiving next week, I want to thank all of you for everything you do every day! The time you spend at work truly makes a difference in the lives of others.

To ensure your time is spent in meaningful ways, we’re expanding the functionality of our Flowsheet Macros which are templates created to autofill commonly used responses on various documentation flowsheets with one click.

Earlier this year, we rolled out two system-level macros for inpatient nursing — Complex Assessment and PIV LDA Assessment (click here for a tip sheet). As a result of this change, over 197,000 clicks were saved in October alone.

Since less clicks means more time, we want that number to continue to grow! So, starting Dec. 3, nurses in all inpatient acute care units will be able to create their own personal macros and share them with other nurses (click here for a tip sheet).

Turning on personal macros allows for increased speed and effectiveness of clinical documentation. Remember though, with great power comes great responsibility — you’re still responsible for all documentation with your name on it. Be sure to always validate all macros, ensure they’re applied correctly and make any patient-specific adjustments, as needed.

What’s next
With our initial success of this feature, we’ll look to expand it to other areas. Discussions with Critical Care and Women’s Services Councils are already underway.

This is just one of the many innovative ways we’re working to automate and simplify your documentation. We recognize your time is valuable, and we’ll continue to stay focused on finding solutions that fill your time with more meaningful patient interactions and less documentation burden.
