For Everyone
“Be careful of public USB charging stations,” warns the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s (DA) Office. The message comes after cases of “juice-jacking” were reported on the East Coast. Juice-jacking is the term for malicious gathering of data from a hacked, public USB charging station.
The FBI sent out a nationwide alert about the threat after well-known security researcher, Samy Kamkar, turned a standard USB wall charger into a covert wireless sniffer. A wireless sniffer is a tiny, wireless device that captures data sent from your wireless keyboard. LA County DA office recommends using an AC power outlet and not a public charging station, unless it’s from a reputable source.
