Starting Wednesday, June 8, sensitive test orders will be updated to reflect the following:
- Sensitive test orders now have three options — Immediate, Manual release and Block release.
- To support the need for patient counseling, HIV test orders will follow a separate workflow.
- Manual release and Block release will be the only two options.
- Immediate release won’t be an option.
- Pregnancy test orders will be added to the sensitive test list, giving it options for Immediate, Manual release and Block release.

Sensitive test orders (non-HIV)
- Immediate release:
- The result will auto-release to MyChart 24 hours post finalization.
- This is the default selection.
- Use this selection in all instances except:
- Where there’s potential for patient harm or
- At the patient’s request.
- Manual release:
- The result will auto-release to MyChart 10 days post finalization but should be manually released earlier if the risk of patient harm has been addressed with counseling.
- Use this option when there is potential for patient harm and you need to review the result with your patient prior to releasing.
- Include the reason for your selection in the Additional details for preventing immediate release.
- Block release:
- The result won’t auto-release to MyChart.
- Use this option:
- At the patient’s request, to prevent the result from being sent to MyChart at all. This will block the result in MyChart from the patient and their MyChart proxy users.
- If there’s potential for patient harm regardless of prior review with the provider.
- Include the reason for your selection in the Additional details for preventing immediate release
HIV test orders only
- Manual release:
- The result will auto-release to MyChart 10 days post finalization.
- This is the default for all HIV test orders so a face-to-face counseling session (as required by law) can be conducted prior to releasing the result to the patient.
- Block release:
- The result won’t auto-release to MyChart.
- Use this option:
- At the patient’s request, to prevent the result from being sent at all or
- If there’s potential for patient harm regardless of prior review with the provider.
- Include the reason for your selection in the Additional details for preventing immediate release.
Reminder: Therapy plans, treatment plans and research protocols
- Active sensitive test orders placed from therapy plans, treatment plans and/or research protocols may not include Immediate and Manual release.
- For existing active orders, the option to immediately release a sensitive result may not be available.
- All sensitive test orders placed from active orders in therapy plans, treatment plans and/or research protocols, that don’t include a sensitive result question, will automatically be held for 10 days post finalization.
- When orders in new treatment days are signed, providers have the option to replace existing sensitive test order(s) with the updated version.
- This will update the order, so it includes the option to manual or block release of the result.
