For All Providers and Patient Registration Staff
Effective Jan. 1
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, all Medicare transactions will require using the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). To help protect patients’ identities, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mailed new Medicare cards and replaced the Social Security Number based Health Insurance Claim Number with a new, randomly generated MBI. Medicare will reject claims submitted with the former Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN). Ask your Medicare patients for their new cards when they come in for care. Use the MBI the same way you used the HICN. Don’t use hyphens or spaces with the MBI to avoid rejection of your claim.
