On Monday, Nov. 14, IV pump integration with Epic completed a systemwide rollout with the final, successful launch at HMCCH.
“Thank you to the hundreds of people, in many departments, who helped bring this effort to reality across our eight hospitals. Your commitment to improving patient safety and clinical efficiency was consistently demonstrated through your preparation, hard work and focus. Together, we’re making Houston Methodist better, and safer, for everyone,” said Vicki Brownewell, HMW vice president, chief nursing officer and project operational sponsor.
This journey began with the first implementation in late 2019 at HMSL and persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic and associated surges with additional launches, and lessons learned, at each campus.
Dr. Ghalib Abbasi, PharmD, MS, MBA, system director of pharmacy informatics added, “With this initiative, I am comfortable saying that we are now the safest hospital system in Houston when it comes to IV medication administration. Other TMC hospitals, as well as several national hospitals, have been reaching over to us for the past two years to learn from our successful journey.”
IV pump integration with Epic facilitates:
- Better patient outcomes and improved safety.
- Less time documenting and more time caring for patients.
- Reduced need for manual searches and documenting IV med details.
- More detailed and precise documentation.
- Decreased potential errors when managing complex IV infusions.
