Yesterday, Houston Methodist held its first virtual 2020 Quarterly Corporate Management Assembly for leaders systemwide. The ability to bring so many people together remotely represents a technology triumph, as this type of gathering would not have been imaginable merely three months ago. To me, this also reflects our adaptability and a culture shift as we’ve rapidly embraced technologies and work practices that previously might have taken us years to adopt.
During the meeting, Dr. Boom acknowledged the outstanding work by many across the system in response to COVID-19. IT was at the top of the list. He also previewed his five guiding principles for Houston Methodist, which Dr. Boom sent to everyone in yesterday’s President’s Letter.

Houston Methodist will be the safest hospital system in the world.

Volumes will be back to normal by July 1.

We’ll achieve at least breakeven by the end of the year.

We’ll avoid furloughs, layoffs and pay cuts.
To echo Dr. Boom’s sentiments, safety is our top priority − and that includes you. What sets this organization apart is our people. Your safety and wellbeing are critical. In IT, we’ve clearly demonstrated that although we’re not physically in the same building, we remain highly effective. As we fine-tune our return-to-office plans and collect your feedback, team members who have been working remotely can do so through the end of June and most likely throughout the summer.
I also want to recognize our frontline heroes who work onsite and provide invaluable services to our care teams and operational partners every day. You continue to deliver on our promise of excellence, thank you.
As Houston Methodist moves forward with our new normal, IT will continue to play a critical role by launching innovative technologies. Dr. Boom’s goals tie into what we always strive to deliver ─ unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation.
