Pneumococcal Vaccine BestPractice Advisory Updates for Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax

For Inpatient Nursing

To ensure the correct pneumococcal vaccine is administered, the Prevnar 13 BestPractice
Advisory will now trigger when a patient is 65 or older, or age 19 to 64 with any of these

  • Cochlear implant
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leak
  • Functional/anatomic asplenia
  • Sickle-cell disease
  • Chronic renal failure
  • Immunocompromising condition
  • Immunosuppressive therapy

A new BPA, linked to orders for Pneumovax 23, will trigger when a patient meets the criteria for a
pneumococcal vaccine, and is age 19 to 64 with any of these comorbidities:

  • Alcoholism
  • Chronic cardiovascular, liver or pulmonary disease
  • Cigarette smoker
  • Diabetes
